The British Railways Southern Region was created in 1948 and survived until the mid 1980s, when British Rail were forced into organizing themselves as business sectors. The Southern Region’s London stations included Victoria, Charing Cross, London Bridge, and Waterloo although the ‘region’ extended as far as Guildford, Reading and Southampton. The J2 modelled was used as a ‘Permanent Way’ van by Southern Region track engineers in the early 1960s, carrying tools and spare parts to keep the railway running. The van’s insignia, CM & EE DEPT, stands for Chief Mechanical and Electrical Engineer’s Department.
