All 3 series cars have a straight engine with four valves per cylinder. The engine line up has been reworked completely and was reduced to basic types, implying that the script nameplate of the individual cars resembles the cubic capacity even less, than it did before. 318 and 320 (petrol and diesel engines) are four cylinder cars with a cubic capacity of two litres. The more powerful cars have a six cylinder engine with three litre cubic capacity and the differences in power are due to the adjustment in charging; the 335d for example uses supercharging. The petrol engines of the 325i and 330i will also be supercharged from the first of September 2007 on. Both are based on a aluminium-magnesium engine block with a cubic capacity of three litres. The difference in power between the 325i and 330i is due to a modified fuel injection. The 335i with two turbo chargers exhibits almost the identical cubic capacity, but is based on an aluminium engine block.
